We (Democrats) Got the House!

Okay, I've not been dead, I've been busy. I know it's been almost 4 months since my last entry, but I've been keeping a private journal of my own. Anyway, first and foremost, HAPPY BIRTHDAY GRANDMA ELIZABETH! I'm glad you were born 70-something years ago today and I'm glad you had a great birthday! It was 71* in Reno today, and 83* here in Vegas, so, it was a beautiful day! I thank God for my grandma everyday and I'm glad she had a day as special as she is!!! :)

VOTE! Today is Election Day and as a moderate democrat, I have to say I'm elated with the current news:

WE WON THE HOUSE!!!!

It's been 12 years since Democrats have had control of the House and I'm so happy about this! I'm not ALL Democrat, and I think it's more about issues and people than political parties, but.....

YAY!!! (By the way, I'm a moderate democrat; not too liberal, not too conservative, very middle of the road!)

Mostly, I'm glad that a WOMAN is now the Speaker of the House! Nancy Pelosi made history, or rather, her-story today, when the Democrats got control of the House, making her the very first female Speaker of the House! I'm exstastic!

Speaker of the House is a very important job, it's the 4th highest job in America, right behind the President, Vice-President and Secretary of State!

Regardless of whether or not I agree with Ms. Pelosi's politics (I don't know enough about her to say that I do or do not), she makes me PROUD to be a feminist today....my prospective children will read about Ms. Pelosi in their history books and I love it when a woman makes, or rather re-writes, history!!!!

I'm so excited! It's a big job and I wouldn't want it, so good luck, Ms. Pelosi!

When I voted this evening, I got in my car and got a little misty eyed. I CAN VOTE! A hundred years ago, women in this country could not. Women and men fought and died for my right to vote; and while I'll absolutely acknowledge the MANY problems in this country today, I am still blessed and proud to be an American! I love my country, I love being a woman in my country and I love that I have the opportunities to make my own choices and forge my own path! So many women (and yes men) around this world cannot vote, and I can, and I did! It is such a privilage and a blessing and NOTHING is more American than that!

Regardless of whether or not the elections turned out the way I wanted them to, and regardless of political party affiliation, it's a precious thing to be able to vote! There are SOOOOOOO many things wrong with this country today, and a lot that needs to be fixed, but the ONLY way to fix that is by VOTING! Standing up, making your voice heard and your opinion count! It's a beautiful, honorable thing!

Not only can I vote, but I have the literacy and tools to educate myself with, to make an informed decision. I have the car to drive myself to the voting booth, I can drive there myself. I can cast my ballot without fear or persecution. I can do all that and come back to my lovely, warm home with running water, electricity, food and comfort. And on top of all that, I have the love and support of healthy family friends! All of this makes me about the most blessed woman around!

Back to politics, once again, WE (Democrats) GOT THE HOUSE!!!! Whether or not we'll get the Senate remains to be seen! But....

Tonight, I feel we've turned the corner for the better and I am so incredibly proud to be a woman, and an American Woman at that!

God Bless America!

In Light N' Love,
-Sarah Liz :)

P.S. If I sound like a feminist, it's all my grandma's fault! LOL! In a good way, though. We were talking politics this weekend and she was telling me about how it was when she was my age and how she wishes she could trade places with me. Well, the way the world is going, that doesn't sound like a bad idea sometimes. But, that conversation made me realize what a feminist my grandma is, and where I get it. I resent the fact that us feminists have a bad wrap. I'm a feminist, and I'm not a bra-burning, baby-killing, man-hating female. I love men, I think they're great, but women are great too! I believe in humans, as a collective race; I believe in living and let living; I believe in marriage; I believe in equality! Feminism is simply the radical notion that women are people (Gloria Steinham said that I believe)--and we are! I am proud to be a feminist, in a quieter, more reserved way, and I'm even prouder to by grandmother's grandaughter! Happy Birthday, Grama, and thanks for instilling the pride of a woman in me! I love you!
