As I write this entry, my grandmother is spread across an O.R. table, but I have to keep myself busy today, otherwise, I'll just go crazy worrying about her.
I watched the CMT Awards the other night, a little bit, bits and pieces of it anyway. I've always been a country music fan, going on 20 years now. It all started with The Judds. Growing up, my mother forbad me to listen to rap or metal, which in the early 90s, pretty much left country music. I always say Country Music found me, and I still feel that way. I love music in general, and as an adult, I've really come to respect other genres. But, my love of and my heart, always goes back to country music. Although not what it used to be, is still one of my passions in life. I miss the country music I grew up with, but luckily, lately, it's taken a turn back towards that music. In the words of Barbara Mandrell, "I was (always) country when country wasn't cool.". My musical choices have never been popular among my friends or boyfriends. People automatically assume that if you're a country fan, you're a redneck, and I'm NOT. Rednecks are great, but I'm not one of them. My daddy was a redneck, my cousin's a redneck, so I have nothing against them. But, let's face it: I'm allergic to horses and hay and am entirely too liberal for the country music. I'm a self-proclaimed 'city-girl,' and can't stand the smell of manure. But, despite all of that, I'm still a country music fan! And this, is exactly why! Jeff Foxworthy gave a speech at the awards the other night (he hosted), and I couldn't have said it better myself. The next time someone makes fun of me for liking country music, I'll just refer them to this speech! That includes my boyfriend, Colin. I love him dearly, and I'm actually glad he doesn't like it that much; although, I have gotten him to like a few songs. The truth is though, I HAVE lived my life to country music--it's rare that I find a song on country radio that doesn't have some memory attatched to it for me. I love that. I love my life! And I love my country music! So, without further ado, here's why:
Why I Like Country Music by Jeff Foxworthy:
"I like country music because it is about the things in life that really matter.
It ain't about bragging about how you are going mess someone up or how somebody ain't respecting you.
It is about love, family, friends, with a few beers a cheap woman and a two timing man thrown in for spice.
It doesn't take political sides even on things as ugly as war instead
it celebrates the brave men and women who go to fight them, the price they pay to do it, and the longing we have for them to return home to the ones they love. It's about kids, and how there aint nothing like them. I get tired of hearing about how bad our kids are today because there are a lot of great kids today that just need someone to love em and believe in them.
Country folks love their kids and they will jack you up if you try to mess with them.People in country music people do not forget the people who allow them to do what they do for a living, they sign autographs and take picture with the fans because they know without them, most of us entertainiers would have to get a lot dirtier in the course of our work day we are thankful that people want to hear the songs and jokes we write.
Country music doesn't have to be politically correct
we sing about God because we believe in Him. We're not trying to offend anybody, but the evidence that we have seen of him in our small little lives trumps your opinion about whether or not He exists! We love Country music because it touches us where we live. It's about mommas and when they were hot, and when they were unnapreciated, and when they were dying. It's about daddies and the difficulties they sometimes have in telling the people that they work so hard to protect and provide for, and how they feel about them.
Country music is about new love and it is about old love
it is about getting drunk and getting sober. It is about leaving and coming home.It is about
real music sung by real people for real people, the people that make up back bone of this country you can call us redneck if you want we are not offended, because we know what we are all about. We get up and go to work, we get up and go to church, we get up and go to war when necessary. All we ask for is a few songs to carry us along the way and that is why I love this show, because it isn't some self-important hollywood hype with the winners determined by somebody else in this show you decide who goes home with a trophy, and you get to dance and sing along with the people that bring you
the songs of your life."My favorite part of the speech? WE SING ABOUT GOD!!! Yes, we do! My favorite song on country radio right now is "Me & God," by Josh Turner. Country music has always had a Christan influence, and I'm darn proud of that!
ME & GOD by Josh Turner:There ain't nothing that can't be doneBy me and GodAin't nobody come in between me and GodOne day we'll live togetherWhere the angels trodMe and GodEarly in the morning talking it overMe and GodLate at night talking it overMe and GodYou could say where like two peas in a podMe and GodHe's my FatherHe's my friendThe beginning And the endHe rules the worldWith a staff and rodWe're a teamMe and GodI am weak and He is strongMe and GodHe forgives me when I'm wrongMe and GodHe's the one I lean onWhen life gets hardMe and GodHe's my FatherHe's my friendThe beginningAnd the endHe rules the worldWith a staff and rodWe're a teamMe and GodHe rules the worldWith a staff and rodWe're a teamMe and GodWe're a teamMe and God Anyway, what an inspiration! I'll leave this entry at that!!!!
God Bless country music, God Bless my grandma Elizabeth and her doctors at this moment (and always!!) God Bless America and God Bless us everyone!
In Light N' Love,
-Sarah Liz :)
